Have you ever wondered about the history of places; cities, towns, mountains, beaches, streams, and other urban and rural locations? I have. In all the places I’ve lived, including where I live now, discovering the nooks and crannies that make that place unique allowed me to feel like I belong there.
JOY for Adults will give you the opportunity to discover places in Colorado, as a resident or visitor. Whether you have one day or one month, you decide what you want to discover, using my checklist, and I’ll create a Journey Out Yonder for you.
John Lane, David Sobel, Thomas Wessels, Richard Louv, Rachel Carson, E.O. Wilson, and others are my mentors in searching for a sense of place. I would like to be your mentor, helping you discover your sense of place, using techniques created and honed by my mentors.
A valuable activity I will utilize is one John Lane writes and teaches, called Circling Home. “Once he was settled he decided to learn everything he could about the place in which he now resides. He took a saucer and a pen and drew a circle on a map that represented a one-mile radius from his home, and proceeded to explore every facet of the place including the topography, history, ancient and current citizenry, and industry. This exploration sharpened his sense of place, and serves as a model for how we might look at our own homes, terrain, and communities.” (New Dimensions: “The Practice of Settlement, Finding a Sense of Place with John Lane. April, 2008)
